Though I have written scholarly articles, poems, and reviews, the following newspaper columns received immediate, thoughtful replies from many readers. Whether we write for business, education, or a general readership, we must remember to tell compelling stories whenever possible—human beings constantly crave strong narratives.
Perhaps, as some cognitive psychologists suggest, our very thinking is built from narrative structures, rather than a more literal set of concepts. Powerful writing is keyed to our psychological natures.
